If you are not using instant messaging, you can turn off the messenger service. Goto Control Panel, Administrative tools, Services, scroll to "messenger", right click on it and choose "Properties", then choose Start Type "Manual", click "OK". Up to the left click on "Stop". An alternative is to purchase a 3rd party software package that blocks popups.
