I have windows xp spk2 installed on D:\ which is a NTFS and C:\ has Dos and is Fat32. My computer was running fine and I shut it down, during shut down Windows installed (8) Microsoft Windows XP updates. The next time I booted up, Windows booted up but there was no Desktop and no errors. I'm able to bring up the Task Mngr, using "Control,Alt,Del". Using Task Mngr, I shut down the computer and re-booted in safe mode, I got the same results. I tried recovery using the install CD, when I got to Administrator Password, I couldn't remember it. I'm unable to recover this way. I have a saved copy of the registry, If I could get to the Dos Prompt on drive D: ..

First, let your system boot up then open the Task Mngr, next click on "File", then "New Task" in the window type in D: then click "OK". This could bring your Desktop up, if it does run System Recovery found in System Tools. If it doesn't bring up your Desktop but brings up drive D: Dos prompt, You can try System Recovery by typing %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press enter. Then follow the instructions on the screen.
