I haven't heard much about Task Panes and I don't seem to have them on my computer. How do I get them to show or not??

Task Panes are one of Windows XP's brightest additions to the interface. Each folder sports its own Task Pane, which morphs to reflect the folder's contents or the currently selected file. Click an image file, for example and the Task Pane displays a thumbnail image of its contents.
Every folder's Task Pane contains at least three sections; File and Folder Tasks, providing file management options; Other Places, providing links to other important folders and functions; and Details, where information about the current folder or file is displayed, including preview images for graphics, photos and videos.

Not seeing the Task Pane could mean that it has been turned off and you are seeing Windows Classic Folders.
In Windows Explorer:
Click on Tools in the menu, Select Folder Options.
Under the General Tab, Choose Show common tasks in folders. Click OK. This should allow the Task Panes to be displayed.
